Pastoral Care & Prayer

Pastoral Care

At Nativity, Malvern, we believe in the power of prayer and the importance of caring for one another in times of need. Our pastoral care team is here to provide support, encouragement, and spiritual guidance to individuals and families facing life’s challenges. Whether you’re in need of prayer or pastoral counseling, we’re here to walk alongside you on your journey.

Pastoral Care Services

Our Priest is dedicated to providing compassionate care and support to members of our church community. Whether you’re experiencing a time of crisis, grief, illness, or simply need someone to talk to, our pastors and care team members are here to listen, pray, and offer guidance.

Some of the pastoral care services we offer include:

  • Pastoral Counseling: Our pastors are trained to provide confidential counseling and support for individuals and families facing a variety of challenges, including marriage and family issues, grief and loss, addiction, and mental health concerns.
  • Hospital and Home Visits: If you or a loved one is hospitalized or homebound due to illness or injury, our pastoral care team is available to visit and provide spiritual support, prayer, and encouragement.
  • Prayer Ministry: Our prayer group is committed to praying for the needs of our church community and beyond. For prayer requests, we always keep your inquiry confidential (unless given permission to share). If you have a specific prayer request or would like to join our prayer team, please let us know.

Community Outreach

Our Outreach team is passionate about getting to know our neighbors and looking for opportunities to meet their needs. We are always looking for volunteers to help with initiatives for our community and the world.

About the Outreach Committee

‘Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.’ (Matthew 25:34-36)

Our baptismal vows include the promise “to seek and serve Christ in all persons.” An important part of our discipleship is reaching out to those around us.

Our Outreach team is passionate about getting to know our neighbors and looking for opportunities to meet their needs. For example, we collect and distribute school supplies so kids in our community can go back to school with all the supplies they need. We open our doors on Christmas Day for a fabulous free Christmas Luncheon for the community. We also participate in the Samaritan’s Purse “Operation Christmas Child” project, where Christmas gifts are packed into shoeboxes and shipped to children around the world.

The Outreach team welcomes new members for a single project or on a regular basis. Please speak to Shirley Dennis if you are interested in getting involved.

Seniors Outreach

Each month, the Church of the Nativity partners with a community organization to provide a low-cost community lunch for seniors. This popular event often finds as many as 100 seniors sitting around tables, enjoying each other’s company.

Our goal is to improve the well-being of seniors and provide them with an opportunity to socialize and spend quality time with friends. A delicious hot meal is served (special diets are available), while lively table conversation and engaging speakers complete the experience. Activities at the lunch include talent shows, music, games, health talks, social services, pension and safety updates, and entertainment by professional artists as well as students from local schools. A seniors’ choir has recently been formed, and the annual bus trip always sells out!

Time and Day: 2nd Thursday of each month

Please contact the Church Office at 416-284-2728 or nativitymalvern@toronto.anglican.ca to register.

You’ll also find our seniors participating in the Men’s or Women’s groups, attending Bible Study or the Prayer Group, serving in the church and taking part in our Sunday worship.

Children & Youth Outreach

Each summer, the Church of the Nativity hosts the Unity Day Camp, a full-day summer camp that runs from July to August. The camp is open from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday (except for statutory holidays).

The goal of Unity Day Camp is to provide the community of Malvern with safe and affordable summer programming; where children can grow confident, make friends and learn skills from their youth leaders. This also gives our youth and young adults job opportunities and builds life-changing leadership skills.

Our camp program includes a mix of visual arts, dance, sports, educational and social games. We provide two delicious and healthy snacks, as well as an optional Pizza lunch on Fridays. An academic component helps keep the kids’ minds sharp while they’re not in school, and the completely optional faith-based component lets them engage in bible stories with questions of faith development, character, and values. The children also enjoy a variety of weekly field trips, plus a weekly trip to a local swimming pool.

How do I register?
Registration for Unity Day Camp generally starts in May and continues through the summer, depending on availability. Contact the Church Office for details at 416-284-2728, or by email at nativitymalvern@toronto.anglican.ca.

Can I work at Unity Day Camp?
Unity Day Camp provides employment opportunities for youth (with the assistance of funding from Service Canada’s Summer Jobs Program) as a great way to gain experience working with children. You must be at least 16 years old to apply for a Counselor position. “Leader-in-Training” and volunteer positions will also be available for those 13 years and older.

After many long years of inactivity, the Malvern After-School Program will be coming back soon! It aims to help children and youth avoid the rise of violence in the community and gives them a safe place to go after school. We provide them with activities that help them stay active, get homework help, develop friendships, and gain confidence. Seniors volunteer as mentors while assisting staff at the program.

More information on the new Malvern After-School Program will be coming soon.

The goal of our Community Scholarship program is to help youth and invest in the future of our community. These scholarships help post-secondary students in their pursuit of academic excellence, skill development, and career preparation. The Scholarship Committee also organizes scholarship workshops and information nights for students and families in Malvern and Scarborough East.

The program began in 1996 when two young people starting university were awarded scholarships of $300 each. By 2012, the church had offered more than 80 scholarships and book awards ranging from $100 to $1800 to first-, second- and third-year students. Several scholarships have been awarded to Anglican seminary students in Ghana.
