I'm New

Congratulations on taking the next step in your faith
with Church of the Nativity, Malvern.

Here are some frequently asked questions about our church:

The Church of the Nativity, Malvern is an Anglican parish, which means that we are part of a wider network of other Anglican churches. Our Diocese is the Anglican Diocese of Toronto.

Anglican Newspapers:

Our worship is grounded in the Anglican tradition and is taken from the Book of Alternative Services.

Most of our services include:

  • Prayer
  • Hymns
  • Readings from the Bible
  • A sermon
  • A Statement of Faith, such as the Nicene Creed or Apostles’ Creed
  • Celebration of the Eucharist (Holy Communion)

Anglican worship has a bit of a reputation for being confusing – stand up, sit down, and stand up again! At Nativity, we try to announce those movements as much as possible so everyone knows what to do. We also provide a list of page numbers and an order of service in the service leaflet/bulletin sheet. We now also have all page numbers on the tv screens.

If you get lost or can’t find the right page, chances are someone will lean over and hand you a book turned to the right spot. We also know we’re all at different stages of our spiritual journey, so please feel free to participate as much or as little as you like.

  • In the Singing – Everyone is invited to join in singing the hymns, found in our hymn books or on the overhead screen. If you can’t see the screen, please let one of the Sidespeople know, and they will give you a large-print copy.
  • In the Prayers – Some prayers are said by everyone, while others are said by the Priest or Lay Reader. Prayers said just by the Priest or Lay Reader always end with the congregation’s response of “Amen,” which means “So be it” or “May it be so.” Please participate as much or as little as you like. If you have special prayer requests, please ask for the Prayer Binder before the service and add them there.
  • In the Offering – All are invited to make a contribution to support the work of the church locally and around the world. These gifts are carried up to the altar, where they are blessed.
  • Communion at the Altar – All baptized Christians, regardless of denomination, are invited to receive the bread and wine during Holy Communion. If you are not baptized or would prefer not to receive Communion, you are invited to join us around the table for a special prayer of blessing.

The Apostles’ Creed is a description of the faith we believe in, and it’s used by Anglicans as part of the promises we make at our baptism. The Apostles’ Creed is also widely used by other Christian churches.

The Apostles’ Creed says:

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.

He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary.

He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.

He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again.

He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in God the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic (universal) Church,

the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting.
